New Orleans high school Mission Experience

New Orleans Mission Parents and Leaders,

Spring Break 2019 is almost here! We’ll be traveling to New Orleans, LA to serve the homeless and nearly homeless through an organization called New Orleans Mission. Our time together will be used to help train our students to be disciple-makers and will include serving, worshipping, and learning. Students will be responsible for planning and cooking 3 meals together as well as planning an opportunity for our Student Ministry to serve after we return to Houston. We have 8 students and 3 adults going

Students are not allowed to have cell phones on this trip and must either:

  • Turn the phone into staff at check-in OR
  • Hand the phone to the parent at check-in in front of staff

We will be sleeping at the St. Mark’s UMC, also known as the North Rampart Community Center, in New Orleans. We will be sleeping in bunk beds and will need twin sized bedding or a sleeping bag.

This trip will stretch us a bit outside of our comfort zones. We will be serving with people who have different life experiences than us. Saturday night we will join New Orleans Mission in their weekly outreach, called Desperate Reality, by going out with them and ministering to the homeless. We will have opportunities to listen to and talk with homeless people, including times for us to tell them how God has worked in our lives.

We will be out late doing this, and then have to get up early on Sunday to prepare and serve breakfast to the homeless at St. George Episcopal Church. This will be tiring, but we will have time to rest Sunday afternoon. On Monday and Tuesday we will serve with New Orleans Mission in the city as well in Lacombe. There will be time to relax, explore New Orleans, and go to Café Du Monde.

All students and leaders must arrive at the Walgreens entrance (Jones Road) of the church at 11:00am on Saturday March 9. We will be driving in a van to New Orleans and will arrive around 5:30pm. On Wednesday March 13, we will arrive back at the church around 4:00pm. It is on the packing list, but please be aware that students need to bring a sack lunch for the road on Saturday March 9. Students will be financially responsible for snacks (outside of the ones we provide), souvenirs, and our visit(s) to Café Du Monde for coffee/hot chocolate and beignets.

Please bring only the amount needed for the days we will be gone. Please do not pack over the counter meds, as we will have those.

Lastly, please be in prayer for our trip beginning now. Pray for God to reveal Himself to us. Pray for God to use us as a witness to those we encounter. Pray that God gives us confidence in our efforts and helps us realize our capabilities in growing His Kingdom. Lastly, pray for safety and good health for all of us.

Blessings,
