The Lakewood United Methodist Women (LUMW) at Lakewood UMC is a dynamic group of women of all ages dedicated to the missions of women and children, as well as serving the Lord in a variety of ways, and in fellowship with one another. Our local unit supports many local ministries; participates in Bible and mission studies; leads the church-wide garage sale to raise funds for local and international missions; and holds an annual women's retreat. In 2021, due to the COVID pandemic, Lakewood UMW will hold a Virtual Silent Auction in April to raise funds for missions. LUMW President Mary Sue Lipham would be happy to answer any general questions about our local UMW unit and can be contacted at lakewoodumw@gmail.com.
Our unit is organized into circles, or small groups, which meet monthly from September through May. The General Meeting for all members is a luncheon held in January for the installation of board officers, and the announcement of the special mission recognition recipient and the UMW Reading Program certificate awards. In the fall, an evening membership event is held to encourage new members to join. Our unit consistently contributes to mission projects such as UMCOR hygiene kits and local school supply bags. Our different circles also participate in other service projects that support missions. Additionally, our Alternative Gifts Market is available throughout the year, with special emphasis in December.
Lakewood UMW continues to support a wide range of missions, from local and regional, to national and international causes: LUMC Matthew 25:35 Ministry, Matzke Elementary, Northwest Assistance Ministries, PTSD Foundation of America, Care Net, Wesley Community Center, Habitat for Humanity NWHC, UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) TEAM (Tomball Emergency Assistance Ministries), The Gathering Place, TOMAGWA Healthcare Ministries, Cy-Hope, Lakewood Men’s Group, Days For Girls, and Lakewood Student Ministries. Over the last five years, LUMW has contributed a total of $210,000 to the missions above. This was made possible by our Annual Garage Sale Fundraiser. Over 300 volunteers from our church and the community assist in this event each year, and over 2,000 shoppers from the community shop the event.
If you want a place to actively serve, grow in God’s word, and fellowship with other Christian Women, Lakewood United Methodist Women is the place for you. Please join us!
*During 2021, meetings may be held on Zoom due to the COVID pandemic.
