Confirmation Class-Postponed Until January 2021

After much thought, prayer, and consideration, we have decided to postpone this fall's Confirmation Class until January due to concerns around Covid-19. The classes will begin January with a retreat January 15-17 and meet each Sunday January 24-May 16, with Confirmation Sunday on May 23. There will be with breaks for Spring Break and Easter. You can register for the class now by clicking below.

Confirmation is open to 2020-2021 8th graders, any high school students who haven’t yet gone through Confirmation, and all of their parents. The Confirmation process is part of how we grow in the Student Ministry at Lakewood UMC where we ask, “Are you becoming like Jesus?” We recognize and value the importance of your role in your student’s faith development, so we expect parents to attend. Confirmation begins January 15 with a retreat and parents’ dinner and culminates with Confirmation Sunday on May 23

Confirmation Retreat (Students): This is a covenant-building retreat January 15-17, 2021.  During the retreat, our students will have times of learning, develop their covenant together for Confirmation, share in small groups, and experience outrageous fun.  The Student Ministry staff will be leading this time with the help of our exceptional adult leaders. Details for the retreat, including a packing list, will be provided one week prior to departure. The Confirmation Retreat is a necessary part of our Confirmation experience, and we expect every student to be present.

Confirmation Dinner (Parents and Other Adults): After students leave for the retreat on Friday Jan. 15, we have a time set aside for you to share a meal, understand the goals, learn what to expect from Confirmation, and walk through the lessons the students will be receiving during the retreat. This time will be led by Pastor Clay Smallwood and is a necessary part of our Confirmation experience, and we expect parents to be present. There is no cost for this dinner.

Confirmation Class (Students and Parents): Beginning Jan. 24 students, parents and other adults will meet together on Sundays, 9:30am-10:30am, in the Scout Building on the north side of the Lakewood parking lot for a time of teaching and roundtable discussion. I will present each lesson, and table leaders will facilitate discussions. Discussion groups will be organized by grade level, including high school specific tables, with parents and other adults forming their own groups.  All necessary resources will be provided. We WILL NOT have Confirmation Class on March 14 and April 4.

This is a course that requires a high level of commitment for a high level of discipleship, and we expect all participants, including at least one parent for each student, to be present at each class.

Please register for Confirmation by Wednesday Jan. 6 by clicking below. The registration fee is $100 per student, which covers all Confirmation costs, including the retreat and class materials. Money is never a reason not to participate. Scholarships are available for anyone who asks. Please contact me at clay.smallwood@lakewoodumc.org or 281-370-2273 if you need more information or have any questions. If your son or daughter is not currently active in our Student Ministry, this is a great opportunity for them to get connected.

I am thrilled to be with you in spring 2021 as we connect together and confirm our faith!

Blessings,

Pastor Clay Smallwood
