We’re excited to invite you and your student to participate in Confirmation at Lakewood United Methodist Church. Confirmation is open to 2021-2022 8th graders, 9th graders, any high school students who haven’t yet gone through Confirmation, and all of their parents. The Confirmation process is part of how we grow in the Student Ministry at Lakewood UMC where we ask, “Are you becoming like Jesus?” We recognize and value the importance of your role in your student’s faith development, so we expect parents to attend. Our first class will be Sunday morning Sept. 12, followed by the parents’ dinner Friday Sept. 17 and Confirmation Retreat Sept. 17-19. It culminates with Confirmation Sunday on Jan. 23rd.
Confirmation Retreat (Students): This is a covenant-building retreat at camp Cho Yeh in Livingston, TX, Sept. 17-19. During the retreat, our students will have times of learning, developing their covenant together for Confirmation, sharing in small groups, and experiencing outrageous fun. The Student Ministry staff will be leading this time with the help of our exceptional adult leaders. Details for the retreat, including a packing list, will be provided one week prior to departure. All students must have a medical information/liability release form on file to go. The Confirmation Retreat is a necessary part of our Confirmation experience, and we expect every student to be present.
Confirmation Dinner (Parents and Other Adults): After students leave for the retreat on Friday Sept. 17, we have a time set aside for parents to share a meal, understand the goals, learn what to expect from Confirmation, and walk through the lessons the students will be receiving during the retreat. This time will be led by Pastor Clay Smallwood and is a necessary part of our Confirmation experience, and we expect parents to be present. There is no cost for this dinner.
Confirmation Class (Students and Parents): Beginning Sept. 12, students, parents and other adults will meet together on Sundays, 9:30am-10:30am, at Lakewood UMC in a room to be determined later, for a time of teaching and roundtable discussion. Pastor Clay will present each lesson, and table leaders will facilitate discussions. Discussion groups will be organized by grade level, including high school specific tables, with parents and other adults forming their own groups. All necessary resources will be provided. We WILL NOT have Confirmation Class on Sept. 19 (Confirmation Retreat), Nov. 21, Dec. 19, or Dec. 26.
This is a course that requires a high level of commitment for a high level of discipleship, and we expect all participants, including at least one parent for each student, to be present at each class.
Please register for Confirmation by Wednesday Sept. 1. If you signed up for our planned spring classes that were not able to happen, we need you to sign up again. The is no registration fee. If your son or daughter is not currently active in our Student Ministry, this is a great opportunity for them to get connected.
